Finals Week Prayer by Ian Gaston

Lord,
I come to you in hope that you will be with me through the next weeks as I trudge my way through finals. Specifically, I want to ask for three things: discipline, so that I can stay focused...; patience, so that I acknowledge that studying takes time and I should not freak out as my brain feels like exploding; and finally for knowledge so that I know what to study. Please guide me through these last weeks of the semester and bring me through these finals filled with your joy and peace.
Amen.

Advent 1

Matthew 4:18-19 As [Jesus] walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.”

Have you ever stepped into the unknown? It can be scary. There may be much that’s unknown when you make a new beginning. The fishermen took a giant step into the unknown when they got out of their boats to follow Jesus. Where would he take them? What would they do? What would happen? There was no way for them to know. But they knew enough to trust Jesus and to accept his invitation.

It was costly discipleship for the fishermen to follow Jesus. They let go of important things. But they were ready for the new life that Jesus offered them. They were ready for a new beginning, even if they didn’t know all it would mean or everything that would happen.

We make a new beginning this Advent. Jesus calls us to step into a new life and an unknown future. We can trust and not hold back. He will find us there.

Make us, we pray, faithful stewards of Your great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of Your name. Amen.

Discovery - by d365.org

Pause

Discovery is about exploring to find something new. On the road of discovery you may find a new world, a new perspective, a new person, or a new idea about the world.
God may have a good surprise in store for you today.
So, let us begin a journey of discovery. Let us seek out the goodness of God in this world. Let us take time to think about what “good" means to us. Let us praise God, for God is good.

Listen

Praise the Lord! O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever. Who can utter the mighty doings of the Lord, or declare all his praise? Happy are those who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times. Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people; help me when you deliver them; that I may see the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory in your heritage. Both we and our ancestors have sinned; we have committed iniquity, have done wickedly.

Think

It has always amazed me how much good God was able to accomplish through Mother Teresa. She was one who observed justice and did righteousness. She was helping the hungry and sick. She was showing people respect and worth in the way that she loved them. She was speaking out against injustice.
Mother Teresa’s actions make me wonder if God is able to use me for good, too. Do I allow God to work through me for the good? Do I stand up against injustice? Do I love others with respect? Am I willing to learn what God thinks is good and important?
Sometimes it is hard to shut out what the world thinks is good and focus on the goodness of God. God is doing mighty acts all around you today. Take time to watch and observe where God is at work. Be open to gaining a new perspective. Give praise to a good God.
Brenda Thompson

Pray

Show me God, what is good. Help me to see what is right and just. Help me to know what love is and share it with the world. May all of Creation give you praise for your goodness and love. Amen.

Go

Go out into the world looking for the goodness of God.
Go out with the courage and faith to trust in God’s goodness.
Go out with an open mind and heart.
You may discover something new.

SLOW

"I have another modest proposal to make. Nothing too grand, just a simple notion that might prove helpful to anyone trying to live a more intentional spiritual life. My idea is this: declare one day a week as your slow day. The rest of the week, you can run along at the usual hectic pace of our generation, but give yourself and your family one day to move according to a much older clock. Take time for breakfast together. Walk somewhere instead of drive. Spend some time in the park or garden. Have a long cup of tea and a chat. Have a sit down dinner. Read before bed. Slow down for one day and give yourself time to just be you."
The Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, Choctaw

UBUNTU!

- Do you know what UBUNTU mean?
- If you were able to name something with the word UBUNTU, what would it be?

Ubuntu - "I am because you are" “A person is a person through other persons. None of us comes into the world fully formed. We would not know how to think, or walk, or speak, or behave as human beings unless we learned it from other human beings. We need other human beings in order to be human. I am because other people are. A person is entitled to a stable community life, and the first of these communities is the family.” - Desmond Tutu

-How can you experience UBUNTU in your life this week? How can you help others to experience UBUNTU?
